What is Kinesiology Tape?

Kinesio tape is a thin, waterproof tape made of the combination of cotton and spandex. It is thin and stretchy as human skin, with a grid-like pattern which makes it breathable. The tape also has water-resistant medical-grade adhesive that is strong enough to stay on for three to five days, even when you play your favorite sports or shower. It is a great non-bulky alternative to a heavy brace for treating a wide array of injuries, used by many physical therapists. Kinesiology tape is applied on top of an injured or strained area to  support it.

As you move, the tape, skin, and connective tissue over the muscle or tendon also move, pulling slightly away from the muscle and creating space for lymphatic fluid to flow around and transports white blood cells throughout the body and removes waste products, cellular debris, and bacteria from the inflamed tissue. Kinesio Taping helps to reduce pain and promotes natural healing processes in our bodies.

In a rehabilitation setting, taping after a manual therapy helps to support the area. This allows the muscles and ligaments nearby to heal while taking pressure off the areas that were manipulated during your physical therapy session.

Benefits of Kinesio Taping

  • reduce muscle exhaustion
  • reduce muscle soreness
  • alleviate pain
  • diminish swelling
  • improve lymphatic drainage and blood flow
  • prevent injuries

What does the Kinesio Taping treatment look like?

Our skilled therapists use this patented method of applying tape to affected joints or body parts to treat a variety of conditions, including neck and lower back pain, knee, ankle, shoulder, and elbow conditions. We use Kinesio Tape combined with other therapies, such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, manual therapy, or therapeutic exercises to ensure each patient achieves maximum healing potential.

Before the Kinesio Tape application, the skin and muscle are compressed, resulting in less blood flow and a buildup of pressure and inflammation, which results in pain.

After application, the Kinesio Tape creates support for the inflamed muscles and forms folds, which increase the space between the skin and muscle. This enables fluids to flow freely, decreasing pressure and inflammation.

PDR Physical Therapy & Wellness Center is a leader in this safe and exciting method and we are thrilled to offer this healing service to you.
